Chairs, Chairs, Chairs
In June 2022, I volunteered time to collaborate with students from the Camosun College Fine Furniture class to create a video to promote their end-of-year exhibition “Chairs, Chairs, Chairs”.
As a graduate of the program myself, I can relate to how much hard work goes into the design and build of this final capstone project. We’re so used to seeing the final polished product, but we don’t necessarily see the prototypes, machinery and tools involved, and mistakes and breakthroughs along the way. I think seeing some of the process can be really insightful, especially for those who have never worked with wood.
I was informed that the students had recorded short video clips for documentation. They shared these with me, along with their poster design and illustrations. I edited the footage and animated the information and illustrations, along with original audio layered with an instrumental track. I checked in with the students at each stage of the process for their feedback. The result is a 30 second video that was used as a promotional tool for social media. The students loved it, and I hope it will inspire more students to document the making of their work.
